CHOLESTEROL

 CHOLESTEROL IS A VERY FAMILIAR NAME BUT DO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHATS IT????????????

  •  The word ‘cholesterol’ has been derived from Greek words, chole=bile; steros=solid; ol=alcohol. It is widely distributed in the body.
  • It is synthesized by all nucleated cells of body. The major sites of synthesis of cholesterol are: liver, adrenal cortex, testes, ovaries and intestine.

Do you know what the difference is between

 BAD CHOLESTEROL and GOOD CHOLESTEROL?????

LOW density lipoproteins(LDL):
  • LDL concentration in blood is related with the risks of CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES.
  • This leads to the rise of ARTHEROSCLEROSIS leading to myocardial infraction(MI).
  • The cholesterol gets deposited in tissues, which form plaques…
  • This is known as Bad cholesterol.

HIGH density lipoproteins(HDL):
  • It is “ANTI- ATHEROGENIC” or protective in nature.
  • HDL is known as GOOD CHOLESTEROL or H=Healthy in HDL.

HDL level below 35 mg/dl increase the risk, while level above 60 mg/dl protects the person from coronary artery disease(CAD).

  • Abnormality of cholesterol metabolism may lead to cardiovascular accidents.
  • In India, 20% deaths are due to coronary artery diseases (CAD).

DO YOU WHAT ARE THE NORMAL VALUES OF CHOLESTEROL???

  • Total Cholesterol            140-200mg/dl
  • HDL Cholesterol male       30-60mg/dl
  • HDL Cholesterol female    35-75mg/dl
  • LDL Cholesterol 30-39yrs 80-130mg/dl
